You are chasing a version of success that does not belong to you. It is time to stop.

You do the work. You hit the targets. You secure the impressive title, the brand prestige, and the high salary. Yet, you wake up feeling entirely miserable. You are disengaged at your desk and exhausted by the time you reach your front door. You live your life waiting for the weekend. You are operating under a definition of success handed down by society, and it is quietly destroying your drive.

Stop seeking the myth of work-life balance. Seek consonance. Discard the arbitrary markers of achievement that look good to other people. Success is not about how your life looks from the outside. It is about how your life feels from the inside.

Laura Gassner Otting, a confidence catalyst and author of Limitless, joined me on Influential Visions to discuss the exact framework required to build a limitless life through growth thinking. We unpacked the dangerous realities of the modern career path and the necessary steps to engineer a life you do not need a vacation from.

You must discard society’s definition of success. Purpose does not require a lofty, world-saving mission. That expectation is a trap. Purpose is often highly practical. It is getting your family out of debt. It is building a profitable business. It is saving enough capital to buy a house on the beach. Define your actual objective. Name it. Own it. Once you define what actually matters to you, the noise of external expectations falls away.

Destroy the “I Will Be Happy When…” Mindset You convince yourself that satisfaction lives just on the other side of the next promotion. You believe you will finally breathe when the next quarter closes. Laura describes this mindset as a cancer on your dreams. It stops you from locating happiness and utility in the present moment. If you constantly defer your fulfilment to a future date, you will spend your entire life waiting. Take control of your career today.

Seek Consonance Over Balance Work-life balance is a mathematical impossibility. It implies an equal distribution of hours that simply does not exist for driven professionals. Instead, you must advocate for work-life alignment, or what Laura terms “consonance”. Consonance occurs when your core values align directly with your daily work. It allows you to be the exact same person at home and at the office.

When you lack this alignment, you are forced to constantly change costumes between your personal and professional lives. This performance causes deep emotional exhaustion. If you are missing consonance, you must act. You must change your career, change your workplace, or fundamentally change your own framework and mindset.

Execute Your Side Quests You have a mortgage. You have real-world family responsibilities. You cannot always walk into the office and quit your job today. That is the reality. The solution is the “side quest”.

Think of your career like a complex video game. Before you can battle the final dragon, you must build your skills and gather your resources. You prepare for your main career goals in the margins of your day. Study your industry. Listen to podcasts. Read the literature. Ask to tag along to high-level meetings in your spare time. This low-risk learning builds the competence you need. Competence builds confidence. Confidence allows you to execute a major life change when the time is right.

Reframe Failure and Weaponise Ambition Growth thinking requires a total recalibration of how you view setbacks. Failure is not the finale. It is a fulcrum. You must use your mistakes as leverage points for learning and rapid iteration. A mistake is never a dead end unless you choose to stop walking.

Furthermore, you must reject the societal stigma surrounding ambition. Ambition is not a toxic trait. If gaining more resources, money, or flexibility enables you to fiercely support the people and causes you love, then ambition is your absolute responsibility. Do not apologize for wanting more.

Curate Your Environment The company you keep dictates the ceiling of your potential. You must audit your relationships. If you spend your time with people who demand nothing of you, you will stagnate. Otting strongly believes that “if you are the smartest person in any room, you’re in the wrong room”. Find the rooms that make you uncomfortable. Find the peers who force you to elevate your standards.
